1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Many of us know who you are but we'd love to know how you describe yourself I’m a GP and a mother to two live-wire children who have both been carried since birth. I have run the Sheffield Sling Surgery and Library for the last three years and recently opened a retail arm called the Sling Spot. I’m deaf and I lipread. 2. When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book? I’ve had much of the book in my head for a couple of years and it found its way into articles for the Sling Surgery. Pinter and Martin approached me in early 2015, and I finished writing in January 2016. 3. So can you tell us the inspiration behind your new book? Any particular personal experiences etc Being deaf, being able to see my children’s faces for lipreading was vital to developing our communication, and carrying was a way to help this. Carrying has mattered to me functionally, and has also brought me great joy. The experience of working with thousands of parents at the Sling Surgery has convinced me that carrying really matters; the look of relief and love on a mother’s face as her child settles into a carrier and falls asleep is priceless. 4. Describe your working day? They are all different! I am a practicing GP and fit the Sling Surgery into my non-clinical days/mornings. A typical day might be a few consultations and a workshop, followed by an afternoon session at my GP practice, seeing patients, dealing with letters and prescriptions, home visits, sorting out some practice business and doing essential admin, getting home just in time to kiss my children goodnight. The evening would be spent packing and preparing for the big library session the next day, plus a couple of hours dealing with all the day’s emails and messages and sling queries on Facebook and general admin, as well as some GP admin. 5. As you worked on this book, what struck you as the most important contributions that babywearing can make to parenting? It gives parents their hands back; they can meet their child’s needs for closeness and contact, while still being able to get on with the demands of modern daily living. 6. How did you come up with the title of your book? It is part of the “Why It Matters” series by Pinter and Martin. 7. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as a babywearer? What has been the best compliment? That’s a hard one. I’ve never really had any unkind criticism of my carrying; it’s all been constructive from people I respect (like Lorette at Slingababy). The best compliments are those from parents who have found the love of carrying and feel it has made a real difference to their lives. 8. What will you say to families skeptical about babywearing? I would talk to them more about the importance of carrying; everyone carries their children. We all need to spend more time in contact with our children; it is essential for normal and healthy development including their future mental health. It is hard to carry babies in your arms as much as they need to you to; a carrier will help you to do this while still being able to do the things you need to. You cannot spoil a child by loving him and giving him the gift of the security that comes from being close to you. 9. When writing your new book, did you experience writer's block? Oh yes! 10. How did you manage to fit writing in with other demands on your time? Are you good at managing your time? It was a real challenge; lots of evenings and weekends were involved and I had to take some time off work. Yes, I am good at managing my time; I have to be to get everything done! 11. Please guide us through the stages of your book - the ideas, the planning, the drafts, working with an editor Most of the book was already in my head and much of it in article form already. Turning it into a book, with references was hard work. I did a lot of reading and note-taking, wrote a (too-long) first draft, and the series editor (Susan) helped with rewriting and cutting a lot of text as there was a strict word limit. There was much more I could have said! There were people to lay the pages out, to check the references, an illustrator and more editors! The proofreader and the indexer had the last job before it went to print! 12. Dr Rosie, you have inspired many babywearing families home and abroad. We congratulate you and your family on the launch of your new book. In conclusion, what would you like to say to those have pre-ordered your book and those who are yet to. I hope you enjoy it - and that it inspires you to encourage the people around you to carry their children more. Pinter and Martin have the book here -http://www.pinterandmartin.com/why-babywearing-matters.html Hello J&J families, We love to listen to the things you say from time to time and we are happy to tell you that we are now considering weaving the SMP in newer colours as requested by you. So the warp (background) will be black as shown below and we will alternate the wefts. If you had the chance to choose two of the SMP colorways below, which would you go for? Please note that we will consider weaving the two colorways with the highest rating so lets all vote for our favorite. We anticipate that these wraps should be ready in approximately 3 months time but we will advise our chatter page members about our weaving progress. If you're not a member of our chatter page, you might be missing out on our behind the scene gists. Click here to join. So ready, steady, vote ! Voting will be closed in 5 days time. Thank you xoxo ...and by the way, please don't forget that for tomorrow's monochrome dream release, we will be selling a few shawls and snoods as well. |

I want to talk today about stretchy wraps, now I'm a big fan of all things woven but I have a real soft spot for my stretchies, for anyone who hasn't come across them a stretchy wrap is a piece of fabric that has enough stretch in it to be pre tied and baby can be put in afterwards, usually made from a soft supple jersey type fabric as opposed to a woven wrap which is woven from a variety of fabrics and doesn't have any give in it. These are really good for people new to babywearing as they are extremely forgiving of a sloppy wrap job and perfect for teeny tiny babies.
There is increasing evidence that is showing that babywearing can help prevent or help with the recovery of post natal depression too, by boosting hormones and just having the infant in contact with its parent (or carer).
Stretchy wraps in particular are ideal for newborn to 6 months, they provide a gentle yet supple support for a babies developing spine and hips, they can be used for as long as they are supporting baby in the optimum positions (m shaped legs, following T.I.C.K.S) I used mine up to 12 months with my son - mainly because I was scared of woven wraps though.
Speaking of breastfeeding, once you've got the hang of tying the wrap and breastfeeding is well established you can combine them both, it takes practice but it means much more freedom (if you really have to get up and go somewhere - if you don't then make the most of being stuck to the sofa!) I find my newest boy likes to time his feeds around the school run, so this skill has become invaluable to me, and most people don't even know you're feeding until they peek into your coat to see the baby. (He once unlatched and managed to spray milk at an unsuspecting parent!).
My last and most favourite thing about stretchies is they're so practical, I can tie one on then pop my coat over the top, so in nasty icy sleet on the school run I simply lean into the car, pop baby into the pre tied wrap, zip my coat (actually daddies that I borrowed as it's big enough to go around us both) up over the wrap and wander into the playground keeping us both warm and dry without any messing around with long woven wrap tails dropping in the wet, then simply pop them back out when you're back at the car without taking your coat off.
You are in one of the most challenging and rewarding times of your lives.
You want to do anything and everything to make sure your baby thrives.
Sleepless nights, cleaning that little butt, feeding, cuddling, playing and even more is now part of your routine.
Good moments and sometimes even bad ones, if you know what I mean.
Through laughter and the tears a wrap will surely help you along the way.
But be careful, one or two or six wraps might stay.
Addicting is the right word for this phenomenal world of beauties.
We only want the best for our little cuties.
So if you feel tired, happy, stressed, wondering if you are a good parent, blissfull or simply zen, pick up a wrap so you can cuddle.
Because babywearing helps with any mood or struggle.
There is nothing more sacred then you holding your little one close to you.
Be OK with every choice you make and everything you do.
One more advice before I leave you to explore this lovely community.
Be grateful, cherish each other and live in unity.
You are a great parent, don't forget!
With babywearing you will have no regret.
This journey will not always be one that is easy. There may be difficulties, there may unwanted comments, there may be times you think sod it.
But I can assure you that this journey will be more than worth making. The bond, the love and the sheer joy that babywearing brings is not to be underestimated or undervalued. There is something inherently magical about the warm, soft, trusting weight of a newborn sleeping on your chest, and also about the squeals of joy from an independent toddler who is enjoying your closeness while exploring the world from your back.
It's a comfort in sadness, a calm retreat in stress, a much needed refuel when things are getting tough.
It's feeling your baby's warm breath on your neck and knowing that all is right with the two of you.
Persevere, new baby wearer, there is a whole world of love just waiting to be discovered inside that length of fabric.
There will be days where you doubt yourself, whether you will be the parent you had always hoped to be.
You will have moments where you will feel disconnected from you bubba.
You will wonder if having this little human was right for you.
And then with nothing else left you will pick up this wrap.
You will hold you little baby close and with each tug of the wrap you will connect again.
You will see a beautiful little face staring up at you. Amazed and in awe of you. Secure in your arms.
That little face will snuggle into your chest, feel at peace and you will know love.
You will feel each others breath - in and out - and know that you are right for each other.
You will feel balanced. You will feel peaceful. You will feel loved.
Alice Kendrick Welcome to the family! Just remember everyone starts at the beginning, we've all struggled with a carry or figuring out the best carrier for us. We've all drooled over the stunning custom carriers, and wept over the destruction or loss of a beloved carrier. Join in the convo, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, and don't apologize for the state of your hair, makeup, or the mess of your home, we've all been there, most of us still are! smile emoticon
Ayesha Jones Babywearing is such a wonderful personal experience that I am so grateful for. The wraps are absolutely stunning with so many variations of style and finishes that you can learn. It saved me in so many ways. It enabled me to be hands free to entertain my eldest as well as comfort my baby. You get free cuddles all of the time and once baby is used it it you can instantly feel them relax. There is nothing more comforting than feeling your baby close to your heart and feeling their breath on your chest. They start getting excited when they see the wrap when they're older which confirms that it was that the best decision I ever made when it comes to being a parent. It won't always be easy and you'll have days where you feel like completely giving up but stick with it. There are plenty of people who can offer great advice and wonderful support. Embrace every minute of it because it won't last forever and Cherish every moment.
Emma Mellor Joy and Joe's come in reds greens and blues,
And many other colours can be suited to you,
Babywearing fits as snug as a glove,
And soon you'll be coveting the 'Fountain of Love'
Sam Rainbow Dear Mamma,
I now right now it feels like it'll never happen. I know the beautifully wrapped baby bottoms seem impossible, and the pretty finishes seem like trying to catch smoke. Yes, I know your little one has screamed since you tried to wrap them again and again, yards and endless yards of fabric tangling itself around your arms, legs and various pieces of furniture. And yes, it's tiring, sweaty and seems unachievable. But I promise you one day you'll try and it will all fall into place. Your passes will glide, your seat will be full and most of all your little darling baby will cuddle in close and fall asleep. And you'll feel like the King of the world. The world is your oyster, you'll meet the strangest, best and most loving people and learn a whole new language of abbreviations and blends. One word of warning though - one is never enough and before you know it you'll be stashing, trading and hoarding! Welcome to the rabbit hole, it's a wonderful place! #carrymyjoy
Emily Lightstone Babywearing can be magical with lots of cuddles and closeness. Sometimes the moments are less romantic when you need to calm down a crying or screaming child but babywearing works for that, too. It can help you get around or do things around the house. It can connect you to a whole network of positive, amazing people locally and also worldwide. It's another tool you can get to your parenting toolbox and I think one of the ones you will love the most. Looking back on this period, you will not regret wearing your child(ren) as much as you did but rather those time that you didn't. If it feels right to you, be confident in your decision to carry your child but don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Welcome to a life changing experience!

As the travelling of our tester wraps continues, we will be making some adjustments to the final teaching wraps based on your suggestions while continuing to focus on producing a very high-end quality teaching SL wrap.
Our happy faces teaching wrap was woven using the same luxurious weave as our FOL but the weave was simplified to reduce weft floats so that it will be easier for new babywearers to maintain. Our FOL weave itself took approximately 12 months to be developed by our team of textile experts and you can tell from the wrapping quality of our happy faces that the wool-like soft handle and worsted drape is a very unique to Joy and Joe.
1: The vertical stripes will be adjusted to become horizontal stripes.
2: The top and bottom rails will be more defined by using a different colour for each of them.
3: Reducing the spaces between the happy faces in our design and this can be used to help beginner wrappers understand 'strand-by-strand' tightening
4: Making longer sizes available. Please note that our current tester sizes are only samples. We are yet to weave the final teaching wraps which explains why we couldn't make variable/longer sizes available at the start of this testing process. However, longer sizes will be available and shorter ones will also be made available on request.
Please note that our teaching wraps are not going to be sold the conventional way our other wraps are sold. Instead, it will be loaned out to you with a fee of only £60 and this will be refunded to you in FULL (only excluding your shipping fees) when you return your wrap in good condition so that other libraries can benefit from re-using and enjoying the same wrap.
We are constantly working hard to make our slings more delightful to use. We would love your input and your thoughts on how we can make our teaching wraps perfect for sling librarians. Please let us know by completing our poll below. Remember that from the beginning of this year 2015, a weaving loom was set aside, solely dedicated to the weaving of our new woven wraps. So the possibilities of our product development are endless.
You can tell us the colour ways that you would like us to weave and also vote on the proposed amendments. We will announce a date for the pre-order of our teaching wraps and this is so that we get a good idea of the number of sling libraries that would like to have our teaching wraps.
Please don't forget that with our other wraps, we have a fantastic 35% discount for sling libraries and baby-wearing groups with the code 'DEMO' and this covers our new trillusion, feathers and SMP wraps etc. Sling libraries with their special discount codes for their sling library parents can also continue to benefit from that scheme. We are also introducing some newer colours for our new quality stretchy wraps. Please sign up to our newsletters for more updates.. Thank you so much xx
